   Lumber is integral in almost all home building. As a result, there are many ideas about what constitutes a "good" choice.  We opted for pine for much of the frame work.  We used locust, a very dense and rot resistant starin of wood, instead of the more common choice, pressure treated lumber.  The locust wood is all from areas within 50 miles or so of our house, and we felt that was a more conciensious choice.

  The exposed wood in the house is predominantly wood from our property.  We are lucky enough to live on a wooded lot.  During the clearing, a number of maples were felled and let to season.  When I finally got around to milling them, they had spalted.  The spalting or spalding process is something that creates a very visible effect in the grain of the wood.  We used this wood for the trim in the house.  We also had some cherry which we used for door thresholds, and some trim work in the upstairs pod.  Finally we had some ash that we used as the risers and treads on our staircase.
